Fishing Report 5.9.10
The hapuku fishing on the west coast has been really good of late. Most of the fish are 10-20lb but we're getting a good number of 20-30lbers too. The large adults are away on their annual spawn and are due back in October.
Bluenose fishing has been pretty good at the Trench. We caught a nice bag of fish up to 12kg last Saturday. I haven't heard of any bass being caught but it is perfect time for numbers of bass both sides of Nicolson's Trench.
There have been quite a few reports of kingfish on the west coast recently. The have been mainly caught in 60 - 80mtrs at places like hunters bank, the north end of Kapiti and in Stephen Passage. There have been some good snapper caught at durville of late too. Mat Nolan caught a 19.5lber there recently. One guy who I talked to at the boatshow caught 4 kingis to 50lb at Kapiti about 10 days ago (I saw the photos).
Inshore fishing for bluecod and tarakihi has been consistent. The teris have come back at Turakerei Head of late too.
Gurnard fishing at Wgtn Habour entrance has been good. Lyall bay (15mtrs), pencarrow/fitzroy (20mtrs) and inside the habour entrance (10mtr) have been producing very nice fish. Out west in-between Plimmerton Point and Mana Island has been good for 'grunters' to (15 - 20mtrs)

Wgtn Boatshow
Thanks to all the people who supported us at the show. We had a great time giving out smoked fish, talking fishing, selling tackle and trips and meeting heaps of old friends, clients and new fishing folk. From early indications about 4000 people come through the gates. Unfortunately the main boat and chandlery shops failed to come to the show this year after being 'burnt' in the past. Hopefully the organizer can negotiate them to be involved next year.
There was a huge range of fishing gear and some really good deals going down.
Our band - The Southcoast Trainwrecks played at the exhibitors lounge on the Friday night and the free beer and pizza went down very well.
The winner of our free give-away of a weekends fishing in the Marborough Sounds went to Peter Whistler

Tips for Catching and Cooking GURNARD
Spring time is gurnard time

Terrain Primarily gurnard are found on the sand and can be prolific at certain times of the year. They eat worms, crustaceans, small fish and crabs. They seem to hang where there is a variation on the bottom like a hole, bank or incline. They can also just be out in the middle of nowhere too.

Berley and bait A good berley trail will bring the fish to you especially if there is current running. Sometimes it takes 30 minutes or more to bring the fish on. A dispensor on the bottom is the way to berley. Minced tuna, pilchards, paua gut etc is good. Fillet baits like blue mackerel and trevally are proven performers as are strips of skipjack tuna and pilchard. Bait size of about half a finger is good but smaller cubes or squid tenticle size are good too.

Rigs Any rigs work well as long as your bait is near the bottom. The ledger rig or running rig are the most commonly used at present, also straylining or using jig heads, softbait and slow jigs. I normally fish a ledger and running rig and see which one works the best on the day. Normally the lighter the trace and smaller the hooks, the better the hookup rate. Ledger (dropper) rig  3-5oz sinker for surfcasting and 4 – 20oz sinker for boatfishing (depending on current). The droppers can be single strand tied with unit knots or dropper knots with double strands or cut into singles. My preferred hook size is a 2/O but #1 to 3/O are good. Recurves are good for mouth hookups and are self setting.

spots shore - miramar wharf, fitzroy bay, castlepoint and white rock    boat - lyall bay, pencarrow, plimmerton, harbour entrance

my favourite recipe Skin and bone fillets, dip them in a marinade of soy and sweet chilly sauce with a sprinkle of garlic salt and lemon pepper, then dip them into bread crumbs or flour and fry in butter until golden brown.

Fishing Competition

in association with
Southern Bait

June 5, 6, 7th - 2010

 Prizes/giveways $15,000

This was our 7th Annual 'Late summer' fishing comp and the 2nd one held on Queens Birthday instead of early to mid May. If anyone's wondering the reason why we hold it late in the season its because we're too busy in the summer doing charters and the retail/wholesale business. We run it to encourage people to fish in the colder weather because the fishing is still very good but most people pack it in during the colder months. It generates sales for us when normally it would be quiet.
Remember - Winter fishing is fun, as long as your dressed for it.

Weather conditions
Saturday - it was a bit rough for small boaties in the morning (25knot nth wind), especially out west but after the tide turned (11am) the wind dropped and made things a bit more pleasant for the afternoon. there was a 1mtr sth swell on the sth coast.
Sunday - flat calm in the wgtn and mana rec marine limits until 2pm when a Nth/ne of around 20/30 knots sprung up. the trench was rough with 25/30knot NE wind and 1/1.5mtr swells most of the morning. the wind dropped away in the late afternoon early evening

Monday - strong North/NW winds to 30 knots (on the west coast) in the morning changing to a 35knot southerly about 11am then dying out after lunch. The boat section was canceled due to gale NW then gale southerlies forecast getting up to a storm later in the day. The shore section was ok but the water was dirty and it was cold, damn cold. Tony Stenhouse told me on day three he rated this one the coldest of all and he's been fishing them since the very 1st. I'm not sure if he remembers the gale force southerly comp a few years ago when Gary Whitaker caught his 45lb kingfish from the Te-Ikamaru beach. Also last years was held after 3 weeks of storm force southerlies. We had one calm day, one gale southerly day and one storm force southerly on the last day. I wasn't up at 3am in the morning trying for moki like Tony was this year. It was pretty cold then I suppose!
There are some really hard core fishers in Wellington, I take my hat off to you all.

Surfcasting and rockfishing charters

Surfcasting and rockfishing have always been a passion for me. I have fished extensively around NZ's best surf beaches and rock ledges and would love to show you the best fishing this country has to offer.

In my earlier days I fished regularly in local and national competitions with good success (a couple of national titles and a few NZ records).

In 1998 I released the Video ' bent rods and screaming reels' which is now on DVD and packed with good surfcasting and rockfishing action and information. These days while running mainly boat charters i still enjoy the landbased stuff. Safety is top of the priority list then looking after, teaching and helping you catch fish comes next. Pete Lamb
